After 13 years, Coconut Island — the first store to open in Palm Coast's European Village — is closing, store owner Toni Rubin confirmed.

The decision to close the store, which sells men's and women's apparel, was made in early July. Rubin said the decision came as a bit of a surprise but that it was finally time to stop working.

"We've made a lot of friends, lifelong friends, through being here," she said. "It's been an adventure, but it's time to take a step back."

A hard date for the store's closing has not been set, but Rubin said she expects the store to close on Aug. 15. However, Rubin added that the community has been very supporting of her decision.

"It's been a beautiful send-off," she said. "It's bitter-sweet."
