Incumbent county commissioners Nate McLaughlin and Greg Hansen and School Board member Trevor Tucker beat their challengers in a straw poll held at the Flagler Votes Candidate and Voter Hob Nob at the Palm Coast Community Center July 23.
In the Palm Coast City Council races, Jack Howell, the retired Marine colonel and Teens-In-Flight program founder, came out ahead of former Palm Coast mayor and city councilman Jon Netts in the District 2 race; and John Tipton beat Eddie Branquinho and Corinne Hermle in the District 4 race.
In the District 2 School Board race, incumbent Janet McDonald came in third, behind challengers Carl Jones (first) and John Fischer.
Hundreds of people attended the event, and about 200 people took part in the straw poll. The crowd leaned Republican — more Republican candidates held booths and brought their campaign staff and supporters — but so does the county: There are 33,107 registered Republicans in Flagler, 25,134 Democrats and 22,606 people registered without party affiliation.
"It's typically more heavily Republican because typically the Chamber of Commerce is more Republican. But there are more Democrats here than I've ever seen here," said Mike Cocchiola, president of the Palm Coast Democratic Club. "We are a force in this town, and we can get people elected.
The event, Cocchiola added, "gets people to realize there's an election Aug. 28," said "Now, people call it a primary, but for some folks it's actually an election," he said, referring to the races that will be decided Aug. 28 if one candidate gets 50% plus one.
Danielle Anderson, president of the Flagler County Republican Club, said turnout seemed higher this year than in recent years.
"It was crammed into the FCAR building last time," she said. "This gives us more space to meet candidates." She'd noticed Republicans and Democrats talking with one another. "It's really showing that people are interested in hearing both sides of the aisle," she said.
The event was hosted by the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, the Flagler County Association of Realtors and the Flagler Home Builders Association. A total of 22 candidates participated.
