Crime in select categories of violent and nonviolent crime is down a combined 17.6% for the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017, while arrests are up 22.4%, according to numbers supplied by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
The most dramatic changes were in the crimes with very limited numbers, where just one crime more or one fewer makes a big percentage difference — as is the case with murders.
"On the murder rate, it shows a 100% increase, but keep in mind that we have had two early this year, while [in] 2017 we had three under UCR guidelines," Sheriff Rick Staly wrote in an email about the statistics. "Even with this, violent crime is down 37.5% so far this year."
Here's a look at the latest stats:
37.5%: Combined decrease in violent crimes — including aggravated assaults, robberies, rapes and murders — in Flagler County in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017, dripping from 136 total to 85
31%: Decrease in aggravated assaults in Flagler County in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 100 assaults last year to 69 this year)
80%: Decrease in robberies in Flagler County in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 15 robberies to three)
45%: Decrease in reported rapes in Flagler County in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 20 to 11)
100%: Increase in reported murders in Flagler County in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from one to two).
14%: Combined decrease in property crimes — including motor vehicle thefts, larcenies and burglaries — in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (decreased from 758 to 652)
11.4%: Decrease in motor vehicle thefts in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 44 to 39)
8%: Decrease in larcenies in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 586 to 539)
42.2%: Decrease in burglaries in the first six months of 2018 compared to the first six months of 2017 (from 128 to 74)
22.4%: Increase in overall arrests in the first six months of this year over the first six months of last year (increased from 1,190 to 1,457)
