City Council is planning to further discuss what the city can do to lessen the impact of noise and vehicular issues that residents have been concerned with in regards to short-term rentals in Port Orange.
During the Tuesday, June 5, City Council meeting Councilman Bob Ford said he has received concerns from a number of residents about rentals in their neighborhood. Ford said a main concern is noise, especially when there are groups coming in for large events such as Bike Week.
Ford said that just last week there were several complaints during a trucking event where a group of people staying at a house had parked their vehicles in a manner that forced a neighbor to park at another home. Another man who met with Ford told him that the house next door has a new group of people coming in almost every other week.
Ford was told there are frequent parties that keep the man up at night.
"We really do need to regulate [this]," Ford said, adding that the rentals "threaten our residential areas."
Mayor Don Burnette and Councilman Drew Bastian both agreed a workshop would be beneficial to look into what could be done to address residents' concerns. Burnette said he would like the city attorney to look at this issue before meeting.
"I don't know how much we can regulate or what we can do, but there's got to be some guidelines that they should at least be following," Bastian said.
State Rep. Patrick Henry said that one problem is that the state has been preempting cities and counties throughout the state regarding how much can be regulated when it comes to individual homeowners. Henry urged the Council to come up with guidelines and see how the state responds to their proposed plans.
"This is going to be another hot topic when we go back to Tallahassee," Henry said. "It's not going to go away."
