Eighty-two students from Flagler Palm Coast High School, Indian Trails Middle School, Buddy Taylor Middle School, Rymfire Elementary School and Bunnell Elementary School traveled to the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse to compete in the Future Problem Solvers International Conference from June 6-10.
"I am very proud of our students for their efforts," School Board member Andy Dance said in a press release. "Just getting an invitation to International competition is quite the accomplishment, and every student can be proud of their efforts and for being exceptional ambassadors for their school, our school district and the state of Florida. This year reinforced the fact that competing against smart and well-trained students from across the globe is a tough task."
First place for MAGIC writing in the middle division: ITMS student Michael Mwaura
First place for Scenario Performance: FPC student Katia Martynuk. Martynuk previously earned first place at the state competition in Scenario Performance.
Second place in CmPS education division: FPC Project “LEAD Children” (Love, Engage, and Direct Children). The group had previous earned Grand Champions at the state competition in March. Team members: Julia Hok, Katherine Bereznicki, Zameena Phillips, Lischna Castor, Sara Barnes, Katherine Espinoza and Danielle Stoughton.
Third place for Multi-School Scenario Writing: ITMS student Hope Romaine. Romaine previously earned second place in Individual Scenario Writing at the second competition.
Third place in the senior division for civic, cultural and human services: ITMS CmPS project “Determined to Diminish Delinquency.” The group has previously earned first place at the state competition. Team members: Carson Canady, Corbin Leonard, Jack Petocz, Kaleb Stevens and Sadieth Tarr

FPC student Allie Marino carried the Florida state flag while dressed in a pink flamingo outfit during the opening Procession of States, and FPC student Janine Jao announced a portion of the awards ceremony.
Project LEAD Children shared this message in regard to their award: "We would like to give a big thanks to our mentor and partners, including but not limited tom Mr. Irwin Connelly, Flagler Schools Student and Community Services, Focus on Flagler Youth Coalition, the Carver Board and Mrs. Heidi Alvez. We couldn't have done it without you."
Dance said students will pick new topics for CmPS in August, or they may choose to expand a current project. In the fall, FPS writers will study the topics of space, travel, drones, food loss and waste and coping with stress, he added.
The Flagler School Board will honor all the 2018 State and International FPS winners at the June 19 School Board meeting.
