Portuguese heritage was celebrated on June 8 for the second year in Palm Coast with the “raising of the flags” at Palm Coast City Hall. There was another celebration on June 9 at the Portuguese American Cultural Center as well.
The Honorary Consul of Portugal Dr. Caesar de Paço honored individuals who have contributed to the betterment of the Portuguese communities in Florida: the folklore group from Fort Lauderdale, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly and volunteer Maria Elizabeth Frazão Pereira. Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland and Staly spoke to a packed crowd at the flag-raising event. Master of the ceremony, John Furão, introduced other guests present, including: Portuguese Congresswoman Maria João Àvila; Counselor of the Communities Manuel Viegas; Portuguese American Cultural Center President Orlando Dias; and Portuguese American Cultural Center founder and past President Antonio Amaral.

The U.S. Small Business Association, along with two of its microlenders, presented a free workshop at the Palm Coast Community Center that introduced resources for interested entrepreneurs on Thursday, June 14.
“This workshop is the beginning of a collaboration between the SBA and the African American Entrepreneur Association as we work together to make available resources for the underserved African Americans and minorities in our communities,” Leslie Giscombe, chairman, founder and CEO of the AAEA, said in a news release.
The panelists included: Romessea Lewis, process manager of Black Business Investment Fund; Jeremy Pombier, vice president of VyStar Credit Union; Valerie Green, senior loan consultant of Accion East; and Thaddeus Hammond, economic development specialist of U.S. Small Business Association.
Business owners attending the workshop, sponsored by VyStar Credit Union, learned “how to work with the SBA through the AAEA to secure government-backed guaranteed loans to build and grow their businesses,” according to the release.

The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach will be hosting the Fabulous Fourth Parade in Flagler Beach on at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 4. This year’s parade theme is “Freedom for All.” Applications can be found online at http://www.flaglerbeachrotary.org. The entry deadline is July 1, and there is no cost to enter a float in the parade.
Participants will line up between 8 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. They will receive an entry number and map to their location before July 3 via email. The parade route is east on N. Sixth Street, south on Ocean Shore Boulevard, then west on S. Sixth Street.
There will be a Best of Parade trophy and first, second and third categories for Judges Choice, Best Marching Unit, Best Float and Best of Theme. Awards will be handed out in Veteran’s Park immediately following the parade.
