Each year since 2011, the Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club has supported the Flagler School District’s Summer Reading Camp, which serves students who have some difficulty mastering the reading objectives for third-grade. The Kiwanis Club provided $2,500 to the district to purchase books to be given to the summer camp students.
On the day of distribution of the “Library of My Own” books on June 8, the teachers brought in summer reading camp students into the school library where the books are displayed. The students were able to select eight books to keep and take home as a small library of their own. Call 439-3251 for more information about the club.
Toni Thompson, the daughter of Herbert and Carolyn Thompson of Palm Coast, earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Earlham College in May, according to a news release.
The African American Cultural Society awarded a total of $8,000 in scholarships to three graduates of Flagler Palm Coast High School and one graduate of Matanzas High School during a ceremony at the AACS on Saturday, June 23.
Darryl Boyer, Donald Bryant, Namiah Simpson and Alyssa Wallace were the recipients who have participated in the AACS events for at least two years and submitted the application requirements.
Jeanette Wheeler of the AACS said this is the largest monetary amount the group has awarded since the annual scholarship began in 2010. Donations from AACS and community members provide the scholarships.
Spectrum News 13 announced the winners of the annual Spectrum News 13 Project Weather Scholarship for the 2017-2018 school year. On Friday, May 25, Project Weather Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded to grade 12 high school students who excelled in the field of science, including Palm Coast’s Hannah Umpenhour from Flagler Palm Coast High School.

Approximately 15-18 teens with special needs showed up to surf at Flagler Beach on June 7, but they were unable to surf, as there were not enough coaches to help each surfer, according to a news release by a concerned parent.
The coach told the parents that Surfers for Autism needs at least a three to one ratio of surfers to coaches, according to the release.

Governor Rick Scott announced the reappointment of Anne Patterson and Garry Lubi to the Daytona State College District Board of Trustees on June 8, according to a news release.
Garry Lubi, 60, of Palm Coast, is the senior vice president of commercial banking for CenterState Bank. He received his bachelor’s degree from Canisius College.
Anne Patterson, 68, of DeLand, is a retired math teacher for the Volusia County School System and the former chief executive officer of Mainly Math, Inc. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida.
Both were reappointed for terms beginning June 8, 2018, through March 31, 2022.
