Port Orange library celebrates musicals

Details: Fall in love again with Hollywood musicals at the Port Orange Regional Library, which will show three lively documentaries in July. The first show will be “Hollywood Singing and Dancing – The 1940s." This documentary covers the 1940s, when more than 550 movie musicals were produced. Highlighted artists include Frank Sinatra, the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Lena Horne. Call 322-5152, option 4.

Details: Tomoka Brewing Co. is teaming up with Operation Changing Lives to help raise money to perform life altering maxillofacial surgeries on disadvantaged patients with severe deformities in the United States and abroad. During the timeframe of the event, 10% of sales will be donated to Operation Changing Lives. There will also be live music in the main dining room with Bernie & Joey from noon to 4 p.m. Call 256-4979.

Port Orange Open Water Swim
When: 8 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.
Where: Aunt Catfish's on the River

Details: The Port Orange Open Water Challenge provides individuals with the chance to participate in one of our four distance challenges. Participants can start off with the 500-yard swim or try their hand at the 1,000-yard distance. Anyone training for a 70.3 can try the 1.2 mile distance, while those training for a 140.6 or those who just want a great swimming challenge can go for the two lap 2.4 mile challenge. All swims will be on the marked course in the Halifax River.
The start and finish line will be the dock of Aunt Catfish's on the River. The course will be marked with buoys approximately every 250 yards. Volunteers will be on the course to ensure each group turns at the correct buoy. Volusia County Lifeguards will be on hand to keep all our swimmers safe. Call 265-4110.

Pop Up Park

Where: Riverwalk Park
Cost: Free
Details: July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and the city is inviting residents to join the Port Orange Parks and Recreation and other city departments at the Pop Up Park event for an evening of sports, fun and community involvement. There will be free hot dogs, chips and drinks for the first 100 people. There will be guest appearances by the Port Orange Fire Department, Kona Ice and a mystery guest. Call 506-5851.

Port Orange Family YMCA Triathlon
When: 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Where: Aunt Catfish's on the River
Cost: Starts at $62
Details: The YMCA Tri-Y Triathlon is open to athletes at various fitness levels, from beginners to experienced thriathletes. There will be a free full breakfast buffet provided by Aunt Catfish's on the River, and all participants will receive dry fit shirts and finisher medals. The course will begin with a 500-yard intracoastal swim, followed by a 12-mile bike ride down Atlantic Avenue and a 4-mile run over the Dunlawton Bridge and down Riverside Drive. Call 314-8583.

Kickball for a Cause Festival

Details: This event is for everyone to attend, and all proceeds fund youth in Volusia County who can't participate in athletic programs due to costs. There will be live music from the bands Brothers Within, Sweet Cambodia, Captain Colossal and FannyPack. Activities will include a cornhole tournament, top golf style competition and backyard games. Participants are encouraged to bring tents, chairs and games to tailgate in the outfield.
