There have been 832 stops made by deputies since a Florida Department of Transportation grant-funded operation was launched by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office to target speed and aggressive driving in Volusia County.
Between Oct. 1, 2017 and Feb. 9, 2018, deputies working under this $50,000 grant, which launched at the end of last year, made 318 stops resulting in 195 moving violations and 54 non-moving violations. There have been 138 speed violations, 12 criminal Florida Uniform Traffic Citations, 3 felony arrests and 10 misdemeanor arrests.
The grant funding will continue through September 2018.
When the campaigns were launched, the Sheriff's Office announced that deputies would be out working high-visibility, zero-tolerance enforcement operations at locations throughout Volusia County, particularly in areas with a high frequency of traffic crashes, fatalities and aggressive driving complaints.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the county has seen an increase in traffic violations and traffic crashes throughout the past several years. The Sheriff's Office stated that the number of drivers on the county’s roads spikes significantly during major events at Daytona International Speedway, Bike Week, Biketoberfest and other special events. The seven major arteries that direct tens of thousands of visitors to Volusia beaches also become heavily traveled during holiday weekends and throughout the summer months.
Among 25 Florida counties with a population of 200,000 or above, Volusia County ranks sixth in crashes involving speed or aggressive driving. The goal of this campaign is to reduce the number of those crashes and increase visibility and awareness of traffic enforcement in our county.
