The Florida Department of Education released school grades for the 2017-2018 school year on June 28, and Flagler Schools as a district earned a “B” grade for the seventh consecutive year, according to a news release from Flagler Schools.
Superintendent James Tager said, "I'm proud of all of our faculty and staff, students, and administrators. We are so close to earning that ‘A’ grade as a district, and I'm confident with expected improvement in our graduation rate and acceleration numbers we are poised to push through to that ‘A.’”
A breakdown of schools in Flagler County shows Indian Trails Middle School and iFlagler Virtual School earning an “A” grade. Belle Terre Elementary, Old Kings Elementary, Flagler Palm Coast High, Matanzas High and Imagine Town Center Charter Schools earned a “B.” Bunnell Elementary, Rymfire Elementary, Wadsworth Elementary and Buddy Taylor Middle Schools earned a “C.” Palm Harbor Charter School was an “Incomplete.”
Tager added, “We now start looking closer at the numbers behind these grades. There are bright spots on all our campuses, just as there is room for growth. By using the results of our five-year accreditation from AdvancEd, focusing on literacy and high expectations for all students will help raise all our scores.”
Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager announced on June 27 that John Fanelli has taken on a new role within the district, according to a news release from Flagler Schools. Fanelli will take on the position of coordinator of student supports and behavior. He moves to the district offices after spending 16 years as a teacher, assistant principal, and most recently, principal of Wadsworth Elementary School for five years and Buddy Taylor Middle School for the past year.
“John has excelled in every position he’s taken on throughout his career,” Superintendent Tager said in the release. “I have asked John to step into this new role so that he can have an impact on all our schools.”
He replaces David Bossardet, who becomes the new risk manager for Flagler Schools.
Fanelli admits he will miss the daily interactions with his students but said, “I am excited to grow and expand my knowledge in the areas of leadership and to support all of the schools in the district.”
Superintendent Tager said Mr. Fanelli’s experience will be vital as part of Governor Rick Scott’s mandate on expanded mental health supports for students in all Florida Schools.
“John brings a wealth of knowledge as both a teacher and administrator as additional duties will be added to the position of coordinator of student supports and behavior,” Tager said in the release.
Fanelli is a 1997 graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School. He then attended Daytona Beach Community College, now Daytona State College, and then the University of Central Florida. Fanelli also has a master's degree in educational leadership from Stetson University. Fanelli was named Principal of the Year for Flagler Schools in 2015 while at Wadsworth Elementary School.
The position of BTMS principal opened on the Flagler Schools Human Resources portal on June 29 and has not yet been filled.
