The James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the American History Essay Contest Winners at their February meeting.
In remembrance of the 100th-anniversary of the end of the Great War, students were asked to imagine living in 1918 and consider how the end of the war will impact their daily life as well as the pros and cons of the changes this war introduced to society. As the first place winner, seventh-grader Molly Johnson's essay was entered in the state competition.
Kaylee Haas, senior at Seabreeze High school, has signed a letter of commitment to play college soccer at Reinhardt University in Georgia.
Haas is a four-year starter on SHS's varsity soccer team and has won numerous awards, including Most Versatile Player during her
freshman and sophomore year and Mid-Fielder of the Year during her junior year. She was also elected to be one of the captains of the team this year.
Currently, she is playing club soccer at the Orlando City Youth Soccer Academy. Haas was also the Champion of Character recipient and represented Seabreeze High school at the NAIA Champions of Character lunch. Aside from soccer, Haas played on SHS's varsity flag football team for three years, ran cross country and was a varsity cheerleader for the football team her senior year.
Haas has maintained a 4.5 GPA in school while taking AP and Honors classes and plans to major in biology at Reinhardt University with hopes of becoming a pediatrician or physical therapist working with special needs children.
The Bernie G. Yvon Memorial Fund will award its third round of scholarship this spring.
In memory of performer Bernie G. Yvon after he died at 50-years-old in a tragic car accident in 2014, this scholarship fund was created by his parents to assist students who wish to pursue a career in the Performing Arts. This year, scholarships up to $1000 will be awarded thanks to contributions to the fund via The
Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.
The review committee will take the following into account for the scholarship: knowledge of Bernie G. Yvon, Performing Arts potential and past experiences, financial need, academic record, and GPA. Applicants will also need to submit two letters of recommendation and have a 2.8 un-weighted GPA or higher, as well as plan to attend or are attending an accredited post-secondary institution.

The Ormond-By-the-Sea Lions Foundation, Inc. is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from a local high school.
The student must live in either Ormond-By-the-Sea or Ormond Beach and planning on attending an accredited college, university, business, or trade school in 2018. Deadline to apply is Friday, March 23. Must include a cover page, transcript, community service and extracurricular involvement, references and proof of residency. Call 386-441- 4421.
