Citizen Observer Patrol (C.O.P.) Cpl. Angela Camit was on patrol on Eric Drive in Palm Coast March 15 when a man wielding a 20-inch knife over his head tried to get into her car.
When he couldn’t, he ran, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Camit followed him to Egan Drive, and he charged at her again with the knife. Deputies responded and took the attacker — determined to be Stephen Goldberg, 32 — into custody.
“Had he approached a Sheriff’s deputy in this manner, it is likely that we would have had a different outcome,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. “Our C.O.P.s are invaluable volunteers who serve and help protect this community alongside our deputies. We will not tolerate anyone threatening harm to them or anyone else. He is a career repeat offender. I hope the courts keep him locked up and he is sent back to prison where he belongs before he hurts someone.”
Camit has had several years of experience as a C.O.P., and the Sheriff’s Office will reevaluate protective equipment issued to C.O.P.s, according to the news release.
Goldberg, a resident of Eric Drive, is charged with attempted armed carjacking, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and armed trespassing, according to the news release.
He spent time in state prison on a burglary charge in 2008, and has previously been arrested in Flagler County on charges including robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted burglary, trespassing, DUI and violation of probation.
