A car chase that resulted in a crash eventually led to two Daytona Beach men being arrested on Tuesday, March 21, according to the Port Orange Police Department.
Alex Thomas, 22, was arrested and charged with knowingly and intentionally fleeing from a law enforcement officer in a motor vehicle after being ordered to stop; leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and property damage; operating a motor vehicle while in the commission of a felonious crime; being in possession of a weapon while being a convicted felon; possessing drug without a prescription; and resisting an officer without violence.
According to a POPD incident report, officers were looking for the vehicle of a suspect involved in a fraudulent transaction attempt at the BB&T bank at 900 Village Trail and a fraud at Daytona Beach branch of BB&T as well as in Ormond Beach.
When police located the vehicle the driver led them in a chase before trying to avoid stop sticks that had been deployed and crashing into a stopped vehicle south of the Herbert Street intersection.
A male was seen running from the vehicle and into the wood line behind Nova Road. A second male was on the passenger side of the vehicle and two older males were in the rear of the vehicle.
Police also found a small handgun and bag of green pills that appeared to have been dropped by the driver. Victims of the crash reported injuries and needed medical attention.
The suspect was later seen inside the Nova Family Campground, 1190 Herbert Street, and later located at Golden Gate Circle where he was taken into custody.
The suspect was found to have the vehicle's keys and burns from the airbag being deployed. The suspect was also found to be in possession of a large amount of U.S. money that appeared to have been illegally obtained. The vehicle the suspect had been driving had also been involved in an earlier possible armed robbery and bank frauds in Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach.
The suspect was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond.
A second man, Willie Timmons, 23, who was involved in the crash, was found to be in possession of cannabis, heroin, oxycodone and ammunition.
Timmons was found to have a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested for possession of narcotics and an open Volusia County warrant. He was transported to the Port Orange Police Department where he was found to have five prior felony convictions.
Timmons was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail with a bond of $17,500.
