Starting on March 30, audiences should prepare to laugh at the local premiere of "Disaster!" at the Daytona Playhouse, featuring songs from the 70s and a wacky storyline that go hand-in-hand.
"Disaster!" tells the story of the opening night of the Barracuda, a floating disco casino in New York in 1979 and run by conman Tony, starring Andrew Brunner. The show has multiple intertwining story lines including the tale of two waiters hoping to find some ladies on the ship, a freelance reporter, played by Ormond Beach resident Dawn Sauer, hoping for a scoop on board and lounge singer Jackie, played by Leigh Ann Singleton, hoping to marry Tony. But boogie fever will soon turn into panic as the ship is affected by every possible disaster.
Sauer said the cast is fantastic to work with and that they are all having a great time with the ridiculous aspects of the show.
"It's one of those shows where they setup the jokes so you can almost laugh before the joke even happen — especially if you know the songs from the 70s," Sauer said.
Director Rip Pellaton said the show is very intricate with many tech cues and different set pieces, which can be challenging for an all-volunteer cast and crew. Those who choose to come out to see it should expect a lot of familiar songs if they grew up in the 70s, as well as references to the disaster movies of the era.
"There's nothing deep or heavy about this show," Pellaton said. "It's a lot of physical comedy, wordplay [and] jokes."
For New Smyrna Beach resident Robin Moyle, the show is a family affair. She along with her husband Jim Moyle, who plays Chad, and two daughters Lila and Ava have been performing together on stage for a year. It's been magical, she said.
"It's really just been a thrill to watch the girls blossom in each show and get so confident and have so much fun," Moyle said.
For her 14-year-old daughter Lila Moyle, who is a dancer in the play, it's the songs that make the show.
"The songs that are in the play are some of the best songs of all time and they're all strung together beautifully to form this story, and the cast is absolutely flawless so every song is done justice," she said.
"Disaster!" will have shows at the Daytona Playhouse through April 15.
