With it being his last time to wear the Buccaneers’ blue and gold across his chest in an athletic event, D’Marcus Adams wanted to close out his Mainland career with a bang.
Adams picked up four medals at the FHSAA state track and field meet on May 4 and 5 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
After Friday’s bronze finish in the long jump (6.84 meters), Adams entered Saturday as the favorite to win the 110-meter hurdles, where he dusted the field in the preliminaries with a time of 14.11 — .33 seconds faster than the second-fastest time in boys 3A.
Things didn’t go as planned, however. Adams stumbled out of the block and fell behind Northeast’s Wavell Hinds.
“As I was trying to regain my feet, I was catching him,” said Adams, who finished third in the event with a time of 14.07. “But by that time, it was too late.”
In the 400-meter dash, Adams also hung stride-for-stride with Miami Northwestern speedster Thomas Burns; however, Burns pulled away on the home stretch, crossing the finish line in 46.72 seconds. Adams took silver (his highest finish) with a time of 47.63.
Adams also competed in the 4x400-meter relay, teaming up with Elijah White, Latavies Sylvester and Malcom Reed — who replaced Stephon Mallory in the event after Mallory tweaked his hamstring in the triple jump. Reed ran neck-and-neck with Northeast’s Malik Ford in the final 400 but finished third with a time of 3:17.63, missing out on the silver by .01 seconds.
Adams will go on to play wide receiver and run track for Florida State in the fall.
“D’Marcus Adams is going to leave Mainland as the most decorated track athlete in the history of the school,” Buccaneers coach Terry Anthony said. “It was a joy coaching him these past four years. You can’t replace a guy like that.”
