Deputies arrested a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old on burglary charges May 23 after a local saw two young men wearing hoods and bandanas across their faces drop a flat-screen TV next to a house on Brewster Lane and flee.
The witness called 9-1-1 at about 12:47 p.m., and deputies established a perimeter, brought out K-9s and called out FireFlight, the county's emergency services helicopter, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office news release.
A deputy saw two teenagers run into the woodline near Bressler Lane, and deputies used K-9s to locate them. The 17-year-old, once caught, resisted arrest and tried to flee again but was arrested, according to an arrest report.
A deputy caught the18-year-old, Eric Hayes, after a foot chase.
The search, which had spread through Palm Coast's B-Section, ended just before 3 p.m., and the roads were reopened. Indian Trail Middle School temporarily held its walkers and bicyclists on the school campus until the search was over, but no schools were put on lockdown, according to the news release.
After deputies caught the teens, the resident of a house in the 100 block of Breeze Hill Lane reported that his home had been burglarized, with a TV being among the items stolen. Other items stolen included a cell phone and a necklace.
Deputies returned all three items to the owner. They determined that the two teens had been at the house for a party the previous night.
Hayes and the 17-year-old, whose name has not been printed because he is a minor, were both arrested and charged with burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, grand theft over $300 and resisting arrest without violence, according to the Sheriff's Office news release.
Hayes was also arrested on an active warrant from another county.
“Our agency did a great job in tracking these subjects and taking them into custody without any injuries,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the FCSO news release. “If you’re going to run from us, you’re just going to go to the Green Roof Inn tired, which they did. We also thank FireFlight for their assistance.”
The Sheriff's Office has urged anyone who sees something suspicious to report it to the Sheriff’s Office immediately at 386-313-4911.
