Flagler Palm Coast's Carlos Nieves signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Ave Maria University. Nieves, at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, played in the outfield and at first base for the Bulldogs. Ave Maria is an NAIA program that plays in the Sun Conference. Ave Maria is a private Catholic college located in Southwest Florida.
FPC track and field athlete Courtney Gales signed her National Letter of Intent to run track for Shorter University. Shorter University is a Division II school in Rome, Georgia, that competes in the Gulf South Conference. Gales started running track her freshman year at FPC. She specializes in the 4x400-meter relay, the 4x800-meter relay, the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. She plans to study nursing.
Gales said in a release: "Something I would love to share with the underclassmen athletes would be to always remember, 'Effort beats talent when the talented think talent is enough.'"
The winners for the Flagler County Horseshoe Pitching Club's Just For Fun tournament on Thursday, May 24, were Bob Flanagan and Steve Hoffman. They won 5-of-5 games played.
