It was a night to remember as another generation of middle and high school students walked the stage for graduation before starting the next chapter in their life.
On Tuesday, May 29, a select number of District 14 eighth- and twelfth-grade students would also be handed the final 2018 Student Leadership Awards that have been presented by Sen. Dorothy L. Hukill since 2005. In total there were five students from Port Orange schools that received the award.
Monday, May 14, kicked off the start of students throughout Volusia County receiving the award during their graduation ceremony.
Students received the award based on recommendations by a committee of teachers and administrators who selected recipients of the award based on each student’s grade point average, leadership skills and service in their school and community.
“Every year I am encouraged by the unwavering focus our eight- and twelfth-graders possess in completing their goals, serving their communities and demonstrating leadership qualities,” Hukill said in a prepared statement. “These students are great representatives of their communities, and it is an honor to recognize them and celebrate their accomplishments.”
