Elizabeth "Buffles" Walke turned 109 years old on May 24. She is a resident at Sabal Palms Assisted Living/Memory Care Community. To celebrate, she was joined by family, friends and staff at a party on Saturday.
Jean Marie Scerbo, business office manager at Sabal Palms, said Walke enjoys sitting by the fireplace in the main lobby while reading a book and sipping on a hot chocolate, the Fitness Room where she does morning exercise and winding down with a movie in the Movie Theater.
“She is truly an inspiration to us all,” Scerbo said.
Nicole Guarino, a Palm Coast resident, had a chance to “come on down” on an episode of the longest running gameshow in television history, "The Price Is Right," according to a news release. She won a sensational selection of prizes. Guarino will be featured in the episode that will run on Monday, June 4.
The Spotlight on Youth Talent Show was held on May 24 at the Flagler Auditorium. The winners are:

“The Passion of Marta,” which was published in November 2017 and was six years in the making, is now an award-winning book by St. Augustine author Caren Umbarger. It has been selected as a 2017 Nautilus Silver Award Winner.
Umbarger has been a professional musician and string teacher for more than 35 years and served as artistic director of the Flagler Youth Orchestra for three years. Her first novel, “Coming To: A Midwestern Tale,” won a 2011 Florida Book Award Bronze Medal for general fiction.
The annual People Adjusting to Limited Sight picnic was held on Tuesday, May 8, at Holland Park.
The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month from October to June at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 5400 Belle Terre Parkway, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In conjunction with the Center for the Visually Impaired in Daytona Beach, the group provides information and support to the blind and visually impaired. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School held a “God Bless America” art show May 25-30, in conjunction with the Flagler County Veterans of Foreign Wars ceremony at the school on May 29. Students gathered around the school’s flagpole at 8 a.m. on Tuesday for a patriot ceremony honoring members of the U.S. military who lost their lives in war.
The students in Mrs. Lamb’s classes at Imagine School at Town Center were challenged to build structures out of found materials (recycles) to keep a raw egg safe during The Egg Drop Challenge. The eggs were dropped from an approximate three-story height. City of Palm Coast Fire Department Engine 25 helped the students drop the eggs.
Dr. Ralph Treder and Lee Bentzley, NASA Solar System Ambassadors and members of the Astronomy Club of Palm Coast, visited Mrs. Lujan's fifth-grade class at Rymfire Elementary on Monday, May 21. Their visit was a follow-up to the class field trip to Kennedy Space Center.
The Antonio Amaral Foundation celebrated its 12th anniversary on May 20 in Palm Coast with the contribution of $30,000 in scholarships to Florida students of Portuguese descent. In its existence, the Antonio Amaral Foundation has awarded $267,500 to 177 students and donated $68,000 to people in need. Leadership awards were given to four individuals, two of whom are from Palm Coast.
The scholarship recipients are: Palm Coast residents Andrew Pereira, Brianna Carvalheira, Sky Goncalves, Lia Greene, Hannah Ferreira, Xana Ferreira, Tristan Meister, Juliana Matias, Emily Dias, Nicole Couceiro, Anabella Giuliano, Daniela Teixeira, Adriana Dos Santos and Jason Gomes. Kevin Cruz of Pembroke Pines and Kaitlyn Kehle of Deland were also scholarship recipients.
University Women of Flagler awarded $15,000 in scholarships to five Flagler County High School graduates on Saturday, May 19, 2018. An additional $3,000 in stipends were awarded to prior scholarship recipients.
The Palm Coast Arts Foundation awarded Travis Maynard, a graduating senior from Flagler Palm Coast High School, a $1,000 scholarship in pursuit of his college aspirations to major in music, according to a news release. He plans to attend Stetson University in their dual-degree program studying music performance and music composition. Nominated for the Tri-State band convention at Florida State University taking place in December, Maynard was an all-county clarinetist his sophomore, junior and senior years.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office donated 15 bicycles to The Sheltering Tree, Flagler County's only cold weather shelter for the homeless, on May 22, according to a Facebook post by FCSO. The Sheltering Tree will recondition the bikes before distributing them to people in need in the community as well as to the Family Life Center.
