The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from the community about a shooting that injured a man on Knox Jones Avenue in Espanola the night of Nov. 1 — and, in particular, about the whereabouts of the firearm involved.
The shooting occurred at about 10 p.m., and Sheriff Rick Staly, who had just left a community event, responded to the scene to aid deputies and detectives at the start of the investigation, according to an FCSO news release.
Although there were numerous witnesses, they gave conflicting accounts. Detectives have not found the gun used in the shooting, and believe that someone helped move it from the scene and hide it, according to the news release.
“At this point we are trying to get honest witnesses to come forward and tell us what really occurred. We believe this to be an isolated incident between the individuals involved and do not believe there is an active threat to the community.”
— RICK STALY, Flagler County sheriff
Detectives have asked, "in the interest of public safety and to help determine what actually occurred," that anyone with information on where the gun is contact the FCSO at 386-313-4911 and reference Case Number 2018-103370, or email [email protected], according to the news release. Or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers tipsters may be eligible for a reward up to $5,000.
The man injured in the shooting, a 23-year-old, was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center by the University of Florida’s TraumaOne emergency helicopter.
Deputies, detectives and crime scene investigators are analyzing the crime scene and interviewing several witnesses.
“At this point we are trying to get honest witnesses to come forward and tell us what really occurred,” Staly said in the news release. “We believe this to be an isolated incident between the individuals involved and do not believe there is an active threat to the community.”
