Growing up in Winnipeg — the capital city of the Canadian province Manitoba — Jason Hrynkiw fostered a love for hockey and golf. But prior to entering college, he was forced to make a choice that could change to course of his life: He could accept a scholarship to play hockey for the University of Alaska Fairbanks, or he could accept a scholarship to play golf for the University of Alabama.
He chose golf and never looked back.
Hrynkiw has been involved in the golfing industry for almost 25 years now, both as a player and as a club professional. In late July, he was hired to be the head golf professional at Ormond Beach’s Oceanside Country Club, which currently has 320 members. His first day was Aug. 6.
“I’ve met so many great people playing this game,” said Hrynkiw, who was most recently the head pro at Laurel Oak Country Club in Sarasota. “That’s one of the biggest perks about this business — just meeting people.”
His responsibilities at Oceanside include organizing events, hosting tournaments, and managing the staff and locker rooms. In addition, Hrynkiw, a PGA Class A member since 1996, also gives lessons to the club’s members.
He’s also taken part in the club’s $5.5 million renovation process. The majority of the renovations will occur in the locker rooms and the upstairs portion of the club house. The course’s irrigation system will also be updated. The $1.2 million project is expected to start in April.
“When you get to develop something and they lean on you, your background and your experience is exciting. To watch it explode into something great is amazing to be a part of,” Hrynkiw said. “We’re bringing this club into 2018.”
