The Flagler Radio Aero Modelers took remote-control planes to the sky on Saturday, Nov. 17, during a community-wide event called "Come Fly with Us." About 150 people came periodically throughout the day to learn the fundamentals of remote-control flying.
The remote-control flying club currently has about 90 members who enjoy flying airplanes, jets, helicopters and small drones. The club, which is located at 1100 Old Kings Road S., Bunnell, is open to anyone having a desire to participate in remote-control flying, no matter the age.
"Our clubs goal, was to give back to our community," a news release stated. "For the day, we closed our club to our members, and opened our club to the community. The weather was fantastic with mild temperatures and a light breeze. During the day, there were approximately 150 people between members and local residents enjoying the day. Probably 60 people tried their hand at flying with the help of an instructor, half of them being children."
The club provided four trainer planes with an instructor. The instructor got the planes in the air and then turned the controls over to the “new” pilots. There were several flight simulators for people to enjoy flying without ever leaving the ground. Participants also enjoyed flight demonstrations of aerobatic planes, helicopters and jets.
