The World Professional Football Association announced the launch of a new professional league, the American Patriot League, on Tuesday, Oct. 9, in a press conference at DME Sports Academy.
The first city in the league is Daytona Beach. The team will play its inaugural season in 2019 at Daytona Stadium.
The APL, which is a 10-team league run by former NFL players, is a springtime league with 16 regular season games played from February through July. There will be five playoff games at the end of the regular season, including the APL Championship.
The rules will combine some of the NFL's and college football's.
There will be three tryout camps: Oct. 27-28 (Little Rock, Arkansas), Nov. 10-11 (Houston) and Dec. 1-2 (Houston). Team selection for players is Dec. 10-14. The base salary is $50,000, and you are not charged for a workout. In addition, if you play in the league at least five years, you will be provided with health insurance for the remainder of your life.
"It’s a chance for guys to play professionally and improve their skills, whether they want to continue on to the NFL or not,” WPFA Managing Director Marques Ogden said. Ogden is a former NFL player for the Titans, Bills, Ravens and Jaguars.
