To help cancer patients, Cadette Girl Scout Katelynne Parker made pillows and seat belt covers by hand to cushion the sensitive areas where cancer patients may have ports for their ongoing treatments, according to a news release.
A Palm Coast resident, freshman at Flagler Palm Coast High School and member of Girl Scout Troop No. 215, Parker gifted these items to Florida Hospital Flagler for cancer patients who visit the hospital’s Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center.
“This project has special meaning to me because my great aunt and my grandmother both passed away from cancer,” Parker said in the release. “I am very excited about being able to make someone’s journey for their treatments more comfortable.”
The KIX County Fest, presented by Flagler Broadcasting, was held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Boggin Bunnell Offroad Park located at 7450 W. State Road 100, Bunnell. A day and night of family fun featured music acts like Kaleb Lee from The Voice and The Kentucky Headhunters. A fireworks spectacular concluded the evening. Flagler Broadcasting Vice President David Ayres said about 3,500 people attended throughout the day.
The Flagler Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presented Flagler County Sherrif’s Office Sgt. Jonathan Dopp with a commendation medal for his service as an outstanding Law Enforcement Officer.
During the ceremony on Oct. 5, Sheriff Rick Staly recognized Dopp for his exceptional service and accomplishments during his time at FCSO. Most recently, Sergeant Dopp served as the Structured Volunteer Search coordinator during the massive search for missing juvenile Rickey Wheeler earlier this month.
A 2000 Flagler Palm Coast High School graduate and Palm Coast native is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, home to the U.S. Navy’s newest maritime, patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, according to a news release. Lt. Cmdr. James Donchez is a Navy maintenance officer.
Flagler County’s Open Door Re-Entry and Recovery Ministry will host its third-annual Under the Harvest Moon Gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the Atlantic Ballroom at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast. This event will benefit the Christian-based nonprofit, with money going toward the creation and operation of residential recovery homes in Flagler County that aim to transform drug and alcohol abusers through a six- to 12-month program.
The evening will include a welcome reception and a silent auction, followed by dinner in the Atlantic Ballroom with guest speakers, including alumni from the Open Door Ministry program, as well as Rob Reid, CAP, Joe Mullins and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. The evening will also include an update on the Women’s Recovery House in Bunnell.

Generation IMPACT, the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties young professionals group, has launched a brand new Social Innovation Fund mini grant process. The Generation IMPACT Board invites high school and college students in Volusia and Flagler Counties to submit proposals for innovative projects that address the educational, financial and/or health needs of ALICE families in the community. Students may apply as individuals or groups.
The Generation IMPACT Board will pair applicants with community members to complete a full project proposal, and then students will participate in a pitch competition to propose their projects. A select number of applicants will be awarded mini grants to execute the projects with local nonprofit partners. The amount of grant awards will largely depend upon applicant requests as well as the potential for matching funds.
