On-duty and off-duty firefighters from the Palm Coast Fire Department came to paint a dalmatian in recognition of Fire Prevention Month during a special class at Painting with a Twist on Saturday, Oct. 13. The fire crew gave class participants a tour of the fire engine, as well as tips for fire safety and prevention. PCFD donated a used fire helmet for participants to paint and showcase in the studio.
The Palm Coast Yacht Club is devoting its annual Jingle Bell Bowl to the project “Love in a Backpack,” an effort to raise money to provide weekend nutrition for the children of Flagler County who are on the verge of becoming homeless.
The “Jingle Bell Bowl” will be from 2-6 p.m. Dec. 9, at Palm Coast Lanes, 11 Old Kings Road N. The public is welcome. Cost for team members is $20 each, with individual sponsorships being offered for $30. Boosters are invited to cheer on their favorite teams for a fee of $10 each. The Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast celebrated the eighth-annual Scholarship Awards Dinner on Oct. 13. This year, the 12 applicants received $30,500 in scholarships, making a total of $135,000 handed out to a total of 74 scholarships throughout the last eight years. The event started with a golf tournament on Oct. 12-13, which raised the money for the scholarships.
Requirements for the scholarships included: minimum 3.0 GPA, parents must be PACC members for at least two years, being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, being accepted full-time at an accredited college or university or already enrolled and performing a minimum of 10 hours service to a Portuguese cultural organization. They also must have two letters of recommendation, write two essays and provide proof of Portuguese ancestry. The scholarship funds, while awarded to the students, go directly to the schools they attend.

The Matanzas High School Key Club is holding a canned food drive from Nov. 1-20. All food will be donated to the Grace Community Food Pantry. If you wish to participate, please drop off unexpired canned foods in the Key Club collection box at the Matanzas High School front office between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Matanzas High School sophomore Lovie Haley is running a “Pet Thanksgiving Food Drive” to benefit the Flagler Humane Society. From Monday, Oct. 29, to Friday, Nov. 9, there will be three food boxes at MHS in the main office, guidance office and upstairs spot for people to donate. Items that humane society needs are: canned cat food, dry dog food, animal supplies, housekeeping supplies for cleaning and medical supplies for caring for the animals.
Those interested in donating can drop off items to the MHS main office drop box. On Monday, Nov. 12, Haley will deliver all of the items collected to the Flagler Humane Society so the animals can have a special Thanksgiving.
