When Jacob Miley arrived at the Flagler County Fairgrounds on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20, to compete in the Five Star Conference Championship, he was nervous.
Miley, a gifted short distance runner, wasn’t used to running 5,000 meters through mud, mulch and dewy grass.
But Miley, who transferred to Flagler Palm Coast before the start of his senior year, was the top runner for the Bulldogs on Saturday, finishing in 21st place with a time of 17:48.40.
“The one thing I’m lacking is distance work,” Miley said. “Coach [Dave] Halliday has been pushing me this entire season to be better. He always tells me that I’m a lot better than I think. I think I showed that today.”
Miley was part of a solid effort for the Bulldogs’ boys team, which finished in second behind Seabreeze. The Bulldogs’ girls team also took second — Spruce Creek took home the title — with Jada Williams finishing in the top spot for the Bulldogs. The freshman finished in 13th with a time of 20:46.50.
The Sandcrabs and the Hawks were both favored to win.
“We did about what we expected to do,” Halliday said. “We would have had to have had a really, really close to perfect day to pull off a win over either one of those teams.”
