The Ormond Beach Police Department and Osceola Elementary School teamed up to both help and encourage local students in riding their bikes to school.
As part of Florida Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program, OBPD Customer Service Officer Justin Soard, Sgt. Mike Pavelka and Coach Morgan Belfer put on a bicycle safety class for third to fifth-graders on Friday, Oct, 19. Soard is a certified helmet fitter and Pavelka is a certified bicycle instructor. This is the first time OBPD has participated in the program, said Pavelka in an email.
According to FDOT's website, the SRTS program works to enable all children to walk and bike to school, making it safer and more appealing, as well as to facilitate projects to improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and improve air quality. Florida Hospital provided all the needed equipment for the class, including bikes and helmets. Students in kindergarten to second grade also learned about pedestrian safety and performed practical exercises.
Jennifer Richardson and Paul Strong, financial advisors at Morgan Stanley, recently donates $1,000 to help the Seabreeze High School marching band go to London next year.
The SHS band has been invited to perform at the 2019 New Year's Day Parade in London. The school's orchestra was also invited to perform at Cadogan Hall, home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Instead of paying for your late fees, Volusia County's public libraries will be accepting food for for fines starting Nov. 11 until the 25th.
For each undamaged, unexpired boxed or canned nonperishable food item patrons bring to the library, they will receive a $1 reduction. You can bring up to $25 items. According to a press release, the Food for Fines program is part of the eight-annual Feed the Need food drive by Volusia County Government. Donated food will be sent to local food banks.
Last year, the program collected almost 8,000 lbs. of food.
The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club has volunteered with numerous efforts this past month, including hosting the Belk Charity Day fundraiser in Port Orange where all pre-sale tickets remained with the Lions Club as well as a portion of ticket sales on a recent Saturday. The next ticket sale will take place on Nov. 3.
Nine members also volunteered at Family Renew's recent Ice Cream Social, where they helped serve, cut cake and play games with the children. Also, First Vice District Governor Greg Evans, Co-President Mary Yochum, Past President Bobbie Cheh and Treasurer Katie Hamlin attended boot camp at the Lion's District Office in Orlando.
The Lions Club is currently preparing for its Community Holiday Party on Dec. 3, and Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Dec. 8.

The Racing Fingers Quilt Guild is seeking quilters both new and experienced to join their non-profit. The guild meets on the second Thursday of every month at the Ormond Beach Library, room 4, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. It also meets on the third Monday of each month from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church at 105 Amsden Road.
The guild does a lot of community charities projects, including making fidget quits for Alzheimer patients, and quilts for Project Linus and Honor Quilts for Veterans. Visit racingfingersquiltguild.com for more information.
