Three Ormond Beach residents are spearheading Daytona Playhouse's upcoming production titled "Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother," a vignette-style play about becoming a grandparent.
Directed by Tom Hansen, choreographed by Ashley King and musically directed by Melissa Cargile, this play's opening night show will happen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, with showings until Nov. 11. "Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother" is made up of a series of skits and original songs that celebrate and tell the journeys of the grandmothers of this generation.
Hansen said the play is a unique approach to aging and learning what it's like to turn into a grandmother, something he said people will be able to relate to in some way.
"Everybody that is out there in the world has either already gone through this, or is going to go through this," Hansen said.
The grandmothers in each of the scenes are all new to their role, Hansen said, and adapt differently. The
play deals with showing how different personalities approach this new realm as well as life in general, Hansen said.
The play also features all-original music, which Cargile said allows the cast the freedom to make the songs their own. With no cast recording of the pieces to go off from, they had to start "from scratch." Each scene has its own songs, and it's interesting because it's music the audience will have never heard before, Cargile said.
"We get to interpret the music how we want to," she said.
With about 26 separate scenes and no real continuity in the show between them, the productions necessitates a cast with a lot of versatility. Ormond Beach resident Robin Bassett plays a grandmother in the show. While her character offers comic relief, she said there are also serious moments found in the scenes that the audience can identify with, whether they're a grandparent, parent, in-law or grandchild.
“There’s somebody, there’s some skit, there’s something that people will say: ‘oh, I know exactly what they’re talking about,'" Bassett said.
