Former Ormond Beach City Commission Candidate for Zone 4, James Holcombe, was sentenced to spend the next decade in jail for racketeering and conspiracy to racketeer, charges derived from a Volusia County Sheriff's Office sting in 2015.
At least 21 people were arrested during VCSO's operation for the resale of gift cards derived from stolen merchandise. Holcombe and his father were found guilty of the charges during a week-long trial in early August. Other former employees of Holcombe's previous business, Cash for Cards, testified against him and his father; they are all out on probation.
Cash for Cards had two stores in Daytona Beach and Bunnell. Holcombe's father, Dale Holcombe, operated and owned a third store out of Deltona. He was sentenced to 55 months in prison, the minimum of the sentencing guidelines, said Court Communications Officer Ludmilla Lelis in an email.
Both Holcombes were represented by attorney and Daytona Beach City Commissioner Aaron Delgado and attorney Blake Taelman. During his brief run for City Commission, James Holcombe submitted a candidate statement to the Ormond Beach Observer addressing the then-allegations and asserting that his trial would lead to his acquittal. He officially resigned from his campaign on Aug. 13.
