An Ormond Beach parent has pressed a battery charge on a local school bus driver after finding out he hit her son's head over two weeks ago.

Ormond Beach Police report that the 73-year-old bus driver, who shuttles students at Pine Trail Elementary, can be heard on the school bus surveillance video for Oct. 12, telling the student to "turn around now, sit down," due to the child "horse playing" with other students sitting around him. The report continues to state that the driver eventually leaves his seat, walks back to the student and hits him on the top of his head with an open hand. Police report that the driver then says "that's how you get hurt doing what you're doing."

When the driver arrives at the student's bus stop, the video shows him speaking to his mother about the incident and telling her, "I had to go like this to his head just to get his attention." The mother, who reported the incident to police, described the strike as an "open handed bop."

No injuries were reported. The bus driver was named as the defendant for battery in the police's charging affidavit.
