Negotiating teams for the Volusia County School Board and Volusia United Educators, the teachers' union, reached a three-year settlement on all issues on Oct. 30, according to a school district press release.
Teachers will receive average raises of up to 7.5% over the next three years. The raises are retroactive to July 1, 2018. Teachers also will have fewer meetings, so they can spend more time in the classroom. Elementary school students and teachers also will get additional instructional time.
This is the first three-year agreement entered between the district and union, according to the release. A two-year agreement was reached for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years.
“Much deserved raises are coming to our teachers,” said Superintendent Tom Russell, in a statement. “I appreciate President (Elizabeth) Albert and our bargaining teams getting this deal done."
Albert, VUE President, said it was a long process, and he's glad they reached an agreement.
“This settlement will provide an opportunity for our district to focus on what we need to do in order for our students to thrive,” he said, also in a statement.
The settlement will be presented to the school board and teachers for ratification.
