Bundles of narcotics washed ashore on Flagler County beaches on Sept. 12.
Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to 2450 N. Ocean Shore Blvd. in Beverly Beach at 1:48 p.m. after a Flagler Beach woman called to report seeing drugs on the beach.
A deputy was dispatched to speak to the woman and other beachgoers who'd found the packages.
"I observed four circular, tightly wrapped bundles of suspected narcotics and a large bundle of 12 brick-style suspected narcotics in their possession," the deputy wrote in a case report. "I further observed a single additional separate brick-style bundle in their possession. They advised they located them on the beach and were concerned regarding leaving them on the beach and collected them to contact law enforcement."
At 3:57 p.m., a Flagler Beach Police Department officer found a clear plastic bag containing suspected narcotics on the beach near 1700 N. Ocean Shore Blvd.
The Sheriff's Office deputy notified the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection. A CBP investigator "advised they were investigating numerous suspected narcotic bundles washing ashore in the area [from] St. Augustine to New Smyrna Beach," according to the deputy's report.
The investigator said he'd send a CBP team to Flagler County on Sept. 13 to collect the bundles, which deputies photographed and placed into a secure drying storage facility.
The Sheriff's Office stored the bundles in their original condition at the request of CBP, because the packaging could potentially be used to determine their origin, according to the report.
