Coming off of consecutive losses, both sweeps, Matanzas volleyball coach Julie Menendez was expecting the Pirates to come out with a win against Mainland on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The Pirates started off well enough, holding a narrow lead in the early parts of the first set. But a young Buccaneers team, powered by one of the best hitters in the area in freshman Alexa Wilson, handed the Pirates a loss in straight sets Wednesday night at Mainland High School.
The Buccaneers won the first set 25-21, dominated the second set 25-14 and finished off the third frame 25-17.
"I'm extremely disappointed," Menendez said after the match. "I thought we'd come here and get a win. I didn't think it would be easy, but I thought we should have played better than that."
