The Buccaneers (2-2) built off their Week 3 win over Treasure Coast with a 44-3 beat down of Pine Ridge on the night of Friday, Sept. 14, at Pine Ridge High School.
Buccaneers running back D'Andre McMillian continued his stellar start to the season with another huge performance Friday night. McMillian torched the Panthers' defense to the tune of 3 touchdowns and 150 yards rushing. McMillian had touchdown runs of 8, 80 and 60 yards against the Panthers. The senior has scored at least 3 TDs in every game in the regular season.
"The rate at which he's scoring is surprising," said Mainland assistant coach Terry Anthony, who filled in for Buccaneers head coach Scott Wilson on Friday night. "He's been working his tail off. He's a student of the game. He knows our offense better than anybody. His production is just a result of the hard work he's been putting in and his effort just to get better."
In addition, junior quarterback Taron Keith showed improvement in the passing game, tossing a 30-yard touchdown to USF commit Andrew Plummer and a 60-yard touchdown pass to receiver Shawn Daffin.
After starting the season 0-2, the Buccaneers have finally found a groove.
"They're starting to settle in," Anthony said. "We had a lot of distractions in those first couple of weeks that took our focus away from what we needed to do to get better."
Part of their early season struggles are a result graduating 28 seniors last year, including multiple starters at key positions.
"When you lose that many, you know there's going to be a learning curve," he said. "But that's what we do. We have young guys who have to step up. It's their turn now."
