A few Tomoka Elementary patrols helped keep Ormond Beach's shores clean by cleaning up the beach at the Tom Renick Park in Ormond-by-the-Sea.
"These young leaders show incredible responsibility at school and in the community,"said PE teacher Jennifer Evans in an email to the Ormond Beach Observer.
J&P Cycles will be hosting a classic car and BMX bike show fundraiser on Sept. 29 to support the Seabreeze High School band's trip to London in 2019. Proceeds will also benefit Legacy Housing, a non-profit organization that works to prevent youth homelessness and sex trafficking.
Sponsored by Southern Stone Event Group, Rue & Ziffra and Giant Recreation World, this free, family-friendly event will feature the Holy Smokes Classic Car Show, an RV Exhibit and a performance by the Seabreeze High School's percussion and color guard. The show will also include motorcycle police demonstrations, food, raffles and an awards ceremony.
The fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the J&P Cycles Destination Daytona Superstore located at 253 Destination Daytona Lane.
The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach sponsored Marin
Rohrbacher, a Seabreeze High School junior, for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, which helps rising juniors and seniors become leaders in community service, school and their careers via a four-day residential leadership retreat held at Stetson University.
According to a club press release, Marin is interested in applying to be part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and has applied for the program's scholarship. Her father, Chad Marin, recently became a member of the Rotary Club.
The Ormond Beach Lions Club honored Mike Richardson, known as "The Golf Ball Guy," with the presentation of the club's Lion statue in a special ceremony at its meeting on Sept. 12.
Richardson, who operates a golf shop at the Daytona Flea Market, has donated numerous golf supplies to support the Lions Club's annual golf tournament fundraiser for the past several years. According to a club press release, his donations have helped make the tournament a success with players. The proceeds from the tournament help fund the club's community services.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, Ormond-by-the-Sea Lion Norma Callahan and Ponce Inlet Lions Club President Lion Nancy Epps held a
certification and recertification class for local Lions Club blood glucose screeners.
Callahan is the executive director of the Lions Diabetes Awareness Foundation of Multiple District 35, which provides supplies and training to Lions Clubs to serve their communities with free diabetic screenings to help prevent blindness in adults. Screeners must obtain certification annually, and this session was attended by over 25 Lions, according to a press release.
