Caitlynn Reuter hadn’t made a bogey the entire day. But standing in the middle of the fairway on the first hole — her seventh hole of the day after a shotgun start — Reuter had 88 yards to the pin. She struck a 50-degree wedge perfectly, but she misjudged the wind.
Her ball sailed well over the green, and she couldn’t see the flag when she stepped up to hit her third shot.
“I had to pick a tree in the distance just so I could aim,” she said.
She lofted a wedge high into the air, landing the ball gently on the down slope. The ball went into the hole for a birdie — her first of the day.
Reuter fired a 1-under 35 to earn medalist honors in the Matanzas girls golf team’s win over crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Palm Harbor Golf Club. The Pirates shot a team total of 173 to the Bulldogs’ score of 190.
“It’s thrilling because last year we lost against them,” Pirates head coach Brandi Alred said. “This year, we’re definitely showing improvement with all of our players — not just our top players.”
Reuter, who plays the No. 1 spot for the Pirates, is relatively new to the Pirates' rivalry with the Bulldogs. Reuter was on Mainland’s varsity team as a freshman and sophomore before she transferred to Matanzas her junior year.
Tuesday marked her first win against the Bulldogs.
“It was great. I was relaxed the whole day,” the senior said. “I had a lot of fun with my opponent.”
