An “Americanism - Youth Achievement Night” was held Monday, Sept. 10, at the Palm Coast VFW Post 8696. The event celebrated and honored the youth sponsored by American Legion Post 115 to the following programs: Boys State, Girls State and Youth Law Cadet (co-sponsored with the FCSO and the Law Enforcement Explorers).
There were approximately 75 people in attendance, including the American Legion Florida Department Cmdr. Dianne Boland, the District 17 Cmdr. Willie Branch and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly.
The honorees from Flagler Palm Coast High School were: Boys State delegates Liam Dineen and Tyler Perry, Girls State delegate Anne Joseph, Youth Law Enforcement Cadets Jose Vasquez and John Overton.
The city of Palm Coast’s first mayor, James V. Canfield, will soon be relocating to Maryland to be closer to his family. The public is invited to a celebratory send-off at a farewell reception at 2-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Palm Coast City Hall, 160 Lake Ave.
Canfield’s friends and colleagues will share memories and make presentations. The formal program will begin at 3 p.m. Members of the public will also have an opportunity to share memories and well wishes.
As Flagler County was spared from the effects Hurricane Florence, officials are asking residents who want to assist those in the Carolinas who received the brunt of the storm to make a monetary donation, as sending food and clothing can complicate disaster relief efforts, according to a news release from the county.

Emergency management officials also ask volunteers not to self-deploy. Unexpectedly arriving at a community that has been impacted by a hurricane creates an additional burden for first responders. Many volunteer opportunities still require very specialized training.
Locally, residents can contact Flagler Volunteer Services, [email protected], which has many volunteer programs and volunteer training opportunities, including disaster-related work for those interested in helping after emergency events.
The Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club recognized the seniors of the month at Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools for August and September. Each high school’s administration selects a senior each month who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in school functions and shown academic excellence. Each student receives a certificate of recognition and a small subsidy.

With the girls’ bathroom doors completed, it’s now time to start on the boys’ bathroom. That project will take place Sept. 17 to 20.
