Volusia County Senior Deputy Frank Scofield, who died on June 2 in a cycling accident, will be remembered by the community of Port Orange with a dedication in his name to the boat ramp under the Causeway Park bridge.
The Frank Scofield Memorial Boat Ramp in Port Orange served as a home away from home for Scofield, said Jim Whittet of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. He said that Councilman Scott Stilter put the idea of a memorial ramp into motion the day Scofield was killed.
“I had a relationship with Frank Scofield for the better part of 30 years,” Stiltner said. “To lose somebody like Frank is clearly somebody you can’t replace, but I can tell you that the city of Port Orange and Volusia County is better today because of Frank Scofield.”
Stiltner recognized Scofield’s dedication to preserving Volusia County’s waterways, calling him the most passionate person he had ever met when it comes to taking good care of them.
“I think this award is for the right person, the right location, and for the right reason," Councilwoman Marilyn Ford said.
Mayor Don Burnette thanked Scofield’s wife, Susan, for sharing him with the community throughout the years, and then presented her with a floral arrangement at the end of the dedication.
City Manager Jake Johansson later said in the meeting that the Parks and Recreation Board met on Aug. 6 as well, and unanimously voted to allow a sign that will mark the ramp in honor of Scofield.
