Paper, pencils and notebooks may not be the first things that come to mind when thinking about the inside a fire truck, but on Friday, Aug. 9, that's exactly what an Ormond Beach fire engine carried.
Thanks to Ormond Beach Firefighters Charities's "Fill the Fire Truck" school supply drive, all five Ormond Beach schools will receive two large boxes of
materials for the beginning of the school year. The drive began on July 24, and it's the first one the charity has done. Ormond Beach Firefighter Tabitha Wu said each of the city's fire station became a drop-off location, and that there was good support overall by the community. The charity also used some of its own funds to purchase school supplies for the cause.
"There's just been such a need lately, and not all the parents can always fill such a big void," Wu said. "There's a lot of things that the kids need, particularly in the Ormond elementary schools."
Wu said the Ormond Beach Firefighters Charities would like to thank the community for its support, and hopes the charity can hold another drive next year. The next event for the charities will be for breast cancer awareness in October.
