Put plainly, the Sandcrabs did not play well in their preseason game against University. The Titans routed the Sandcrabs 34-7 on the night of Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The Titans led 27-0 by halftime after scoring three-straight times on the ground and then by connecting on a 60-yard touchdown pass with 8 minutes to play in the second quarter.
“There’s a lot of things that we can do differently,” said assistant coach Joshua Roberts, who filled for head coach Pat Brown, who was absent from Saturday night’s game. “We’ve got to gel, and we’ve got to get off the field in crunch time situations. We’ve got to execute the game plan and get our guys rallying to the ball. We’ve just got to make the plays that come to us, honestly. We can’t beat ourselves.”
Despite the scoring deficit, Seabreeze did have some starters missing on offense and defense. The game was originally scheduled to be played on the night of Thursday, Aug. 15, at Pine Ridge High School. However, a severe storm earlier that day made the field unplayable, so the game was rescheduled.
“It kind of through a monkey wrench in how we were preparing,” Roberts said. “We take the kickoff classic seriously.”
The Sandcrabs’ only touchdown came with nearly 7 minutes to play in the game. The Sandcrabs’ defense recovered a fumble, giving the offense the ball at their own 30-yard line. Backup quarterback J.J. Halcomb connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Terrance Robinson.
“The guys did a really good job at competing tonight,” Roberts said. “But we need to do more as a unit to capitalize during ball games.”
Seabreeze opens the 2019 regular season against Spruce Creek at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Spruce Creek High School.
The Sandcrabs will be tasked with slowing down the Hawks’ premier running back, Marvin Scott.
“Football is played in here,” said Roberts, pointing to his heart. “We’ve got to gel.”
