Ormond Beach’s 9-and-under All-Stars were the district champions as well as runner-ups in the state tournament, earning them a bid to compete in the Cal Ripken World Series on Aug. 3-11 in Jensen Beach.
Facing the No. 1 and No. 3-seeded teams, Ormond Beach got off to an 0-2 start. More than 30 teams competed in the tournament, and the Ormond Beach 9U All-Stars finished in 13th place.
In addition to playing, the All-Stars received recognition. Four players were recognized for individual performance during the World Series as the “Player of the Game”: Evan Attar, Christopher Bailey, Nolan Penney and Dallas Newkirk.
Ormond Beach's team was also recognized by the World Series Committee for their competitive spirit and were honored by receiving the "Sportsmanship Award."
The Ormond Beach All-Stars were also invited to attend the Daytona Beach Tortugas vs. St. Lucie Mets game as the Field of Dreams team, representing Florida youth sports. The team had the honor of standing with the players during the National Anthem.
Oceanside Country Club will host a Members Appreciation Open House in mid-September to showcase the newly-renovated lower level of the clubhouse. Workers have been completing the renovations in sections so the club can remain open for members and
dining. The lower level is estimated to be finished by mid-September.
In early August, OCC opened its golf pro shop, which former club President Kathy Arnold said has been well received by those who have seen it.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said.
New men's and ladies' locker rooms, an expansion for The Grill Room and an outdoor patio area with dining tables, lounging couches, and a firepit are all expected to be completed in time for the open house.
Once complete, the downstairs will have its own newly renovated kitchen. Prior to the renovation, the clubhouse only had an upstairs kitchen, so food had to be run downstairs.
“The members have been so patient in losing parts of their club and being moved from place to place," Arnold said. "They have continued to utilize the club through the summer in spite of the inconvenience."
She also hopes the renovation appeals to prospective members.
“We want prospective members to know that this is a club that is progressive,” she said. “We’re involving more young families, we have an active family group, and we’re modernizing it so it will be a more transitional, welcoming look for our young members.”
