Hurricane Dorian may make landfall early next week as a Category 4 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center, and residents in Ormond Beach continue to prepare on Thursday, Aug. 29.
At the Nova Community Center, the line of cars extended the entire length of the facility, with some vehicles lined up on Main Trail, to receive up to 10 pre-filled sandbags. Distribution will continue from 3 to 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 29. Residents may also get sandbags on Friday, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., pending availability.
U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz was at Nova Community Center this morning, helping load sandbags onto vehicles with city staff. With Gov. Ron DeSantis having declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Waltz said the next step is to get a state of emergency from the federal government. He expects that to happen in the next few days, before Dorian makes landfall.
"Meanwhile, you've got to prepare, and that's what we're doing out here today," Waltz said, and praised the city for its preparation efforts, and providing pre-filled sandbags to residents.
Waltz said it's important for people to see their elected leaders during this time, as well for representatives to see what is going on in their districts.
"As we make broader decisions on resources and we make broader decisions on funding, and where folks need the most help, there's nothing like being on the ground and seeing it firsthand," Waltz said.
You must be an Ormond Beach resident to receive sandbags at Nova Community Center. Please bring a photo ID. Cars must enter from Main Trail and will exit back onto Nova Road. The community center will be closed Thursday and Friday due to sandbag distribution.
Also in preparation for Dorian, the city is currently preparing all city facilities, cleaning drainage ditches and swales, checking standby facilities and portable generators, topping off fuel tanks of city vehicles and working with contractors to ensure closure of sites for the storm.
