In preparation for the holidays, some Ormond Beach Middle School TeenZone students recently made lemon pies.
TeenZone is one of the school-based programs offered by nonprofit Food Brings Hope, which helps provide meals, tutoring and activities for students. For this
latest activity, students worked as teams to follow a recipe, organize ingredients, mix them all up, as well as clean and wash the dishes, a press release stated, noting that for some, it was the first time having this experience in the kitchen.
The students were able to share their pies with their peers and take some home for their families.
“Opportunities such as this baking assignment, teaches our students teamwork and organizational skills, but also gave them the confidence in following a recipe and feeling comfortable in the kitchen," said Celena Stephens, teacher and TeenZone sponsor, in the press release. "They were involved from prep to clean-up and every student participated in all aspects of the activity.”
The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions collected over 4,200 pairs of socks at the Multiple District Lions of Florida and Bahamas fall conference, which was hosted by the Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club, in the beginning of November, and was attended by more than 150 Lions Club members from Florida and the Bahamas.
The Lions had chosen Socktoberfest as the service project for the conference, and they reached out to members, friends, bingo halls and the like for socks.
The socks were then donated to veterans homes on the west and east coasts of
Florida; to the Florida Panhandle for recovering hurricane victims; school children in the Bahamas; and family homeless shelters.
A total of 10 members from the OBTS Lions Club, including District 35-0 Gov. Lion Greg Evans, acted as hosts, a press release states. The three-day event was held at the Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland.
The seminars began with a "Let's Get Wild Safari" costume party held Friday night, followed by a general session on Saturday and the formal Governor's Banquet that night, and a breakfast Sunday morning.
A few special guests included International Director Lion Gary Brown and his wife Barbara from Cape Vincent, New York. Lion Bobbie Cheh received the International Presidents Pin and a certificate of appreciation for promotion "lionism."
The Schoolcrafts' Magical Christmas Village Display is back for the sixth year, free and open daily to the public from 5:30-10 p.m.
Located at 111 Pine Creek Court, the display features lighted walkways filled with inflatable characters and Christmas music. Donations are appreciated and help the Schoolcrafts keep operating the display for free, as well as help provide the gifts Santa hands out.
