Amy Airgood was just in ninth grade when she decided teaching would be her path in life.

She had the chance to go back to her elementary school and get firsthand experience of what a career in education would be like. Airgood planned and taught a science lesson to a group of second and third grade students. Now, Airgood is in her 34th year of teaching.

"I enjoyed seeing the student engagement and excitement," Airgood said. "I felt I was making a difference in the education of those students and decided that I wanted to continue this for the rest of my life."

She currently teaches fifth grade math and science in Ormond Beach Elementary, and this is her seventh year as an educator in Volusia County. Airgood said she was very honored to represent her school as their Teacher of the Year, as well as humbled that her colleagues believe in and support what she does for students.

Her favorite thing about being a teacher, she said, is working with students and seeing hem grow and mature academically. If she could share one piece of wisdom, she would tell her students to never give up.

"Hard work in all areas will strengthen them as both students and members of their family and community," Airgood said.
