Port Orange Fire responded to a fire call at approximately 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, on the Dunlawton Bridge. Fire Chief Ken Fustin said the fire was an accident related to the rubber hoses in a vacuum system that is used to collect dust and particles sandblasted from the bottom of the bridge and that is what caught fire.
The bridge was closed in both directions, and the Police Department was on scene directing the traffic while the fire was ongoing.
Once the fire was declared out, both the east and westbound lanes remained closed until an engineer was able to evaluate the damage as a precaution.
A Florida Department of Transportation engineer evaluated the structure and deemed it safe to re-open around 1:42 p.m.
Fustin said the fire was difficult to access because it was under the bridge. They had to send their people over the side rails of the bridge in order to access the fire.
“They did an excellent job,” Fustin said.
