Port Orange resident Jonathan Foley has declared he will run for the District 1 council seat vacated by the late Bob Ford, kicking off his campaign on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Tim's Corner Restaurant in Port Orange.
Foley moved to Port Orange from North Carolina when he was four years old. He grew up in District 1 and was homeschooled. Currently, he takes classes at Daytona State College and is working toward a major in economics.
Foley is a musician by trade. He started in music at an early age, mostly through his church. He plays several instruments and is a lead singer in a band.
Music has been instrumental in motivating Foley to run for office. He sees that when people go out to hear music, they forget about their problems, at least for a couple of hours. By running for City Council, he said he can help to make life better for people and be able to help solve their problems. He said that is why his campaign slogan is, “Helping people, solving problems.”
If he is elected to city council, one of the first things he would address is the traffic situation.
“Something I would do about the traffic situation is I would create a task force to look into what other options might be there, if there are any, and of things we may be able to propose to the county and to the state," Foley said.
Foley wants Port Orange to be proactive and preventative. He is concerned about the infrastructure, and cited specifically the water main breaks on Spruce Creek and Taylor Road. He believes it is easier and less expensive to fix things before they break, rather than to always have to react to problems.
“That’s what this campaign is all about,” he said. "Getting ahead of things and bringing a fresh, young perspective.”
When asked what he loves about Port Orange, Foley said "everything."
"It’s a beautiful place to be," Foley said. "It’s not only one of the most beautiful places in the county, but in the whole state.”
