Donning gowns and black ties, a ballroom full of people watched a video with personal testimonies about the care done at the Freytag Children’s Rehabilitation Center. Guests watched the pediatric patients smile on the screen, while parents voiced their inexpressible gratitude for what the center has done for their kids.
The video inspired guests to generously give a total of $125,000 at the 10th-annual Moonlit Gala and golf tournament, both on Sunday, Feb. 24, to benefit the future expansion of the pediatric rehab center in Palm Coast, as well as other AdventHealth Foundation and hospital programs in the community.
In 2011, the Freytag center first opened at the hospital on Memorial Medical Parkway with a vision to help the children of Flagler County who were living with birth defects.
“In only nine months, we had outgrown the facility,” Sue Freytag said. “When Parkview Medical Center opened, it was decided, by the hospital, that the children’s rehab center should move over there. At that time, they increased the size three times above what it was at the hospital. The doctors continued to send their patients there. The children loved it. Many times, they didn’t cry because they had to go, they cried because they had to leave. It did such a good job that now we’re looking for further expansion.”
Freytag said that 80% of the pediatric patients at the center are Flagler County kids.
“Before that, the closest facility was either in Jacksonville or Orlando,” she said. “That’s a long way to go with a small child. So, I’m very happy that they have spotlighted the future expansion of the rehab center.”
With the continued increase in pediatric patients at the center, it’s looking toward another expansion in the future.
“It’s just become so popular, and there’s such a need for children for rehabbing,” Freytag said.
Sue Freytag served as the chairperson for the sold-out gala, held at the Hammock Beach Resort.
Foundation Director of AdventHealth Palm Coast John Subers said he was thankful for the continued community support for the hospital and its community efforts.
Anesthesiologist Dr. Glenn Zimmet, of Envision Physicians Services, and Dr. Paul Mucciolo, of EMPros, also spoke about the intentional care and attention AdventHealth provides for patients. Jeanne Robertson entertained the crowd as the comedic guest speaker.
