Port Orange Fire and Rescue saved an injured person from a house fire Wednesday, Feb. 27, shortly after spending the day listening to a motivational speaker talk about being willing to take risks to save lives.
According to a POFR's Facebook post, crews were dispatched after the seminar to the 400 block of Lafayette Street in Port Orange for a house on fire. The crew from Engine 71 arrived first and declared a working fire with visible flames through the roof.
“Great job to the interior crew of Engine 71, Lt Adam Bivens and Firefighter Justin Kaufman for making the grab.”, the post stated. “Truly a team effort by all companies present from POFR, South Daytona Fire and VC EMS.
The crew began an aggressive interior attack and established a water supply. During the crew's search, they discovered a person, who was badly burned. The occupant was removed from the structure, turned over to Volusia County Emergency Medical Services for treatment and transported to the hospital, according to the report.
Prior to the fire, POFR had spent the day listening to speaker Rick Kolomay talk about pride, integrity and leadership during a seminar at the Port Orange Lakeside Center Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Kolomay is a 37-year veteran of the fire service and co-author of the best-selling Fire Engineering book “Firefighter Rescue & Survival”.
