Jewish Federation Executive Director Gloria Max was recognized for her efforts helping feed those in need in the community at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8. She was presented with a special plaque and key to the city.
The mayor's proclamation read that Max, along with her husband Ray and Jewish Federation President Marvin Miller, help feed an estimated 25,000 people a year with the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. The Federation's backpack and school supply program has also equipped about 109,000 children since the mid-1990s.
Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington, who mentioned the Maxes work 16 hour days at the food bank, said the Jewish Federation has done amazing work in the community.
"These two individuals, with Marvin's help, have helped hundred of thousands of people in our area," Partington said.
The Halifax River Yacht Club presented a check $7,850 to the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, thanks to its Christmas boat parade. Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance for non-medical living expenses to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
The parade featured 24 vessels from Volusia and Flagler County. Some of the parade's guest judges included Mike Chitwood and Dr. Kathleen Doughney. This year's prizes were the biggest ever, totaling over $3,500 according to a press release.
The winners were as follows:
Parade Coordinators Julie Brown and Shelly Hamm presented the check to medical oncologist Dr. Chris Alexander at the yacht club's Holiday Ball on Dec. 15.
Riverview United Methodist Church Pastor Mike Moxley welcomed six new members into the congregation in Ormond-by-the-Sea on Sunday, Jan. 6.
Moxley conducted the new member ceremony during the 10:30 a.m. service, inducting Richard Culverhouse, Anna and John Ludy, Donna Harris, Violet Elmer and Ellie Virgona into the church family. Afterward, the congregation held a pot luck dinner to celebrate the new members.
