Port Orange Police Officer Andre Fleming was named as the agency's 2019 Officer of the Year.
Andre was introduced by Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi at the Port Orange-South Daytona Chamber of Commerce City Managers’ breakfast on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Grimaldi said that Fleming is on the emergency response team, the crime suppression team, and the honor guard for the police department. Fleming has received numerous awards of merit and awards of valor for his service.
On March 10, 2018, Fleming responded to a call at the residence of a Port Orange man who had been severely cut by an electric saw. When Fleming arrived on the scene, the man was bleeding profusely, Grimaldi said.
Fleming assessed the situation and applied a tourniquet to the man until paramedics arrived and transported the resident to the hospital, where he was placed in the trauma unit. Medical staff were able to stabilize the patient, and the man survived.
Medics told the department that, if it were not for Fleming’s quick thinking and response, the man would have died.
Grimaldi said that Fleming's commitment to public service go beyond his four-and-a-half years as a police officer and seven years in the U.S. Navy. He said those who know Fleming, know that his values and his desire to make a difference are what make him stand out.
"Andre didn’t act the way he acted that day because of what he does," Grimaldi said. "He did it because of who he is. And that’s really important.”
